The Screwtape Letters and Other Lewis Thoughts

The Screwtape Letters is coming to a theater near you. If you’re not familiar with the work, it’s a C.S. Lewis classic that looks at an average (albeit mid-1900s British) Christian through the eyes of two demons, one of whom (Screwtape) is assigned to watch and tempt a certain man in order to fulfull his job and make his boss (Wormwood) happy. It’s a strange but thoroughly enlightening book. Coupled with the fact that it’s a series of letters, it will be very, very interesting to see how this is adapted for the screen. I’m certainly looking forward to it.

It makes me wonder if they’ll ever adapt Lewis’ Space Trilogy for the movies. Course, I’m wondering if they’ll be able to get through all 7 Narnia books as well. I certainly hope they do. The Last Battle is my number two favorite in the series. And can you imagine the visuals they’ll be able to achieve in 2056?

That is way cool. I am very excited! I love that Hollywood is finally trying to make some money off us Christians. It’s about time.

Hey, I just accepted a job as an IT Manager at a church tonight! Woo hoo!

The Screwtape Letters seems like a strange choice for a movie because of its letter format. Would they try to covert the letters to actual dialogs, or rely on a device like a voice over?

As to your other ideas for movies, could you imagine controversy over movie productions of The Last Battle or That Hideous Strength?

I don’t know about the voiceovers, but they better not spew computer generated demons at us!

Then again, I don’t want the real ones to take away actor’s jobs either.

I have very vivid remembrances of reading The Last Battle as a child. It’s one of those places/books I would love to see, but would also fear to see at the same time because I wouldn’t want it to differ from what my childhood mind conjured up.

I wonder how much (or even if) Screwtape will cause controversy. Do you think there will ever be a backlash to Hollywood’s newly aquired taste for semi-explicit Christian themes in movies? My guess is no, at least not until the money dries up…
